“Keroro Gunsgo To The Polls”: The Possible Behind-the-Scenes of the Ad-nime Short Nobody Expected

A much less existentially depressing display of political campaign buffoonery.

Here’s yet another unplanned post from me. The other long-form ones I was talking about before I keep putting off because of work and also another pretty ambitious project I’m putting together taking my attention—I don’t know how or when to talk about it here juuuuust yet, but it exists in public and some of you already know what it is/have seen it, so stay tuned perhaps.

As you can see from the video link/photo, this post is a writeup about a surprise video apparently commissioned by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government that uses the Keroro characters to encourage young people to go out and vote in the upcoming elections for the Governor of Tokyo. It came out about a week ago, but I initially glossed over it because…well, I thought it wasn’t new. After all, the copyright DOES attribute the copyright to 2014 and it looks very similar to the Flash anime at first glance, so…this must be a reupload from the 2014 Tokyo gubernatorial election or something, right?

Upon looking more deeply into it, no. There’s no record of this ever existing before this week, and it was later confirmed to be new via social media channels. Which means this is technically a brand new piece of animated Keroro content, which I pledged I would report on. So here I am. Whoopee.

This post is going to be about the short from a production standpoint, primarily. I’m not going to spend time on the plot (if you want to call it that lol), as it was already pretty succinctly summarized by this post here by @unfo11owmelol , and I can say it’s more or less accurate, so thank you! I will make a comment in that the Dororo ranting about plastic thing seems to just be a running gag he has now—he was always an environmentalist of course, but his hatred of plastic specifically is kind of new; it was even a major punchline in this month’s manga chapter. In fact, this short has the manga’s quirks written all over it. It’s almost as if Yoshizaki himself was heavily involved in it. Oh wait, he was. But we’ll get to that.

The Context

As previously mentioned, this short was commissioned by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and posted exclusively to their YouTube channel. This is where I was going to have a few sentences about how it was literally exclusively on the YouTube channel because none of the official social media accounts posted about it, but as I was writing the last 40% of the post, Keroro PR and one of the Tokyo government accounts finally mentioned it. So give a pat on the back to ol’ Kirb’s amazing procrastination abilities. Anyways, for the whole week before they finally decided to acknowledge its existence, it literally just dropped on YouTube with no warning and the only reason anybody on social media knew about it is because people whose YT feeds it popped up on were like hey what the fuck is this.

“What the fuck is this” is a pretty good question. While the fact that it’s about the gubernatorial election specifically isn’t directly mentioned in the video, it was pretty obvious given the timing, as it’s set to occur on July 7. I am not the most knowledgeable about Japanese politics as a whole, but this year’s race for governor is apparently particularly competitive, with over 50 candidates running. Here’s a short article giving a rundown of the race so far. The top issue is unsurprisingly the low birthrate, which has been causing panic over the fate of Japan’s economy for a considerably long time now. That’s why the government is very concerned that the voter disparity is incredibly polarizing, with young people voting much less than the elderly.

Well, what better way to fix low youth vote turnout than with anime? After all, the Zillenials want nothing more than to obsess over fictional characters while the world crumbles around them into inevitable disrepair I’m not projecting at all. The irony here is that, when the anime was originally in its prime at least, Keroro’s target audience was elementary schoolers. Indeed, the short definitely has the aura of a PSA they’d show to children, but obviously children are not voting. There’s even a point in the video where Tamama says going to the polling place is an opportunity to visit your childhood school, which is a statement more relatable to young adults. I guess at this point the main audience for Keroro really is considered to be the people who grew up with it in their child/teen years—unless the actual new anime gets a primetime kids’ TV slot, but I’m getting ahead of myself.

Considering this is the most viewed PSA about the election on their YouTube channel by far, I guess it worked to an extent? It’s currently hovering just under 20k views, which isn’t really too much in the grand scheme. But now that it’s been officially shared on social media, perhaps that’ll give it a boost. Will most of these viewers actually go out to vote is the question…

Production staff peculiarities

As with any animated Keroro content following the end of the Flash anime—which until the new show airs has basically just been this, the new project announcement trailer, and some anti-piracy ad they were doing in movie theaters that they ironically scrubbed from the internet—BN Pictures is credited as the animation studio (though the studio Sugarless Factory assisted; they pretty much exclusively do production assistance for various projects). This is interesting because it looks completely unlike anything they’ve ever done. Unless I’m missing something, none of the anime they’ve produced before have been done in a similar Flash-like style.

Now, as we Internet addicts all know, Flash has been officially dead for a few years now. However, it might still be used very rarely in lowkey web animations like this, although a friend who knows more about anime production than I do told me even those are more commonly made using Live2D now. The credits for this short are very…short, but the director and a couple of other animators worked on a particular Flash-animated series called Oshiri Kajiri Mushi (“Bottom Biting Bug”) that first aired on the TV channel NHK in 2012. I’m guessing these staff are freelance, as that show was produced by the studio Kinema Citrus (a team founded by ex-members of Production I.G and Bones), and were possibly brought on to this short because they had experience with the software. If it is animated using something like Live2D, the experience still applies, as it’s apparently more similar to Flash than something more commonly used in anime like Clip Studio Paint. The director also has 3D CG credits and there is a credit here for “motion” that includes his name, so maybe a little of that was used as well. (Wouldn’t be able to tell myself—most experience I have with 3D animation is a one semester Maya course I took in high school lol).

Curiously, despite the potentially similar animation software and very similar artstyle + color palette, none of the animation staff, as far as I can tell, worked on the 2014 Flash anime. That is, except for…Mine Yoshizaki.

On all animated Keroro media, Yoshizaki’s primary official credit is “original creator,” of course. As the series creator, he would of course participate to a degree in most things related to the 2004 series, doing stuff like sitting in on some writing and recording sessions, contributing ideas/concept art here and there, and so on. There’s actually a Newtype article from around the announcement of the first movie I dug up that was officially translated into English, in which Yoshizaki talks about the pressure of being in that role. Most mangaka interviews I’ve seen about their involvement in their works’ anime adaptations are pretty overwhelmingly positive, but he was definitely more mixed. This might be a post for another day, since I have some speculations about his relationship to the anime as a whole. Damn, I need to stop coming up with essay ideas that are probably too big for my pea brain.

Anyway, Yoshizaki was quite a bit more involved in the 2014 series. He served as one of two people responsible for series composition (scriptwriting), though that could be because the Flash anime was a much more direct adaptation of the manga than the original anime, which might as well have been an entirely different series. IIRC, some episodes of Flash were literally 1:1 with the manga’s script…so I guess that counts as writing the anime too lol. He also storyboarded a few episodes and wrote the opening theme song’s lyrics. The next Keroro animation after that was the anti-piracy theater ad in 2021, which he storyboarded for. But you’ll notice with all the credits we’ve discussed so far that he was never involved with the animation proper past the storyboarding stage…until now!

Not only was Yoshizaki credited as original creator as usual, he also did directorial supervision, storyboarding, and was a key animator—the only key animator, in fact! I know it’s just a five-minute short, but the Flash series’s episodes were even shorter than that and had multiple key animators per episode, so this is kind of a big deal. It also might explain why the character designs look just a little bit more on-model to the manga designs than Flash’s did, even though they look almost identical at a cursory glance. It’s easiest to tell by looking at the less-rounded head shapes, plus a few minor details like Tamama’s eye highlights and the bridge of Kururu’s glasses. I am very normal, how could you tell?

So yeah, this makes this short the most Yoshizaki has ever been involved with the actual animation process. I can’t say it gives him the most additional credits, as it’s tied with the Flash series for three extra, but it’s something!

Closing out the staff section, some notes about the cast. As you might expect, the usual actors reprise their roles. Most notably, Mamiko Noto is back to play Mois for what I believe (unless I’m missing a random collab or something) is her first time in the role in ten years, and she pretty much didn’t miss a beat! In addition to Fuyuki and Natsumi’s VAs playing them recently at the Keroro expo, that’s three additional voices besides the Keroro Platoon’s that presumably are still going to be able to return for the new anime.

Otherwise, the platoon sounds pretty much like they did in the anniversary trailer and various other small projects like the anti-piracy ad and Tales of the Rays collab from last year (they each had multiple spoken lines there). Keroro sounds a tad deeper; Tamama has some of the Jibanyan nasal now; Giroro didn’t really talk much but sounds mostly the same; Dororo is also a bit deeper and sounds kinda awkward but I think that’s less the voice direction and more Yoshizaki possibly wrote the dialogue and he speaks more assertively in the manga lol; Kururu sounds literally the exact same because Koyasu is a magic man.

Made in [Insert Year]?? (Ft. A lesson in trademarking)

I mentioned this at the beginning of this post, but for a solid few days, I really thought this video was just an ancient (2014 feels ancient now anyway) reupload. After all, the copyright string says 2014, and only media produced during the Flash series era has that copyright year, so I brushed it off. Here, let me show you all the anime copyright strings per the current anime portal:

There’s no 2004 date on the TV series’s copyright, probably because it covers the entire series from 2004–2011, plus now 2024 onward (and possibly the anti-piracy ad from 2021 as well), and also most anime-branded merch and things. But when the show was airing proper, it was attributed to 2004 (you can see this in the opening credits of any season). The 2006–2010 dates are for each individual movie. And there’s the 2014 copyright that’s the exact same as the video’s, though here it is for the Flash anime, as there’s pictures of it on the anime portal site. As an aside, before 2015, Sunrise was listed instead of BNP. At some point all anime rights got retroactively transferred from Sunrise Inc. to BNP—not sure how or when exactly that occurred. For the movies, there were slight shakeups in the production committee as well (you can see my new project trailer analysis for more on that kind of stuff).

As you can see, copyright strings for the series are attributed to the year each individual “product” came out in, for the most part. But now we know that this ad is brand new. So…does this mean this political ad is counted as part of the Flash anime? They obviously didn’t plan to include this specific video ten years ago (unless Kadokawa bought out an oracle or something, wouldn’t surprise me). Maybe they left the door open to more episodes of the Flash anime proper, but that isn’t what this was advertised as.

Well, I have a theory. A theory that might be totally wrong, but a theory nonetheless. Let’s go on a massive tangent about the Japanese trademark system! (Disclaimer: I have no formal training in the legal field. I just have really weird research hobbies.)

I’m going to focus on two basic principles here. First, once trademarks in Japan are officially registered, they are active for ten years before the copyright applicant must reapply to renew ownership of the trademark for another ten years. Second, trademarks have to be filed under certain classifications that basically tell the JPO (Japan Patent Office) what goods and/or services the applicant plans to use the trademark for. This means that sometimes the same trademark will be filed multiple times for different use classes. The classifications are each given a two digit class number, which is further subdivided into five-character group code(s).

You can actually search through all public patents yourself on J-PlatPat, and the site is machine translated into English (though you still have to type the copyright you’re looking for in Japanese). Let’s take a look at the three different filings for ケロロ軍曹 (just the name of the series itself, not the logo).

I’m on my phone so I couldn’t fit the entire window, but the important information is here. Kadokawa Corporation is the filer for all of these, though Yoshizaki’s name is probably also on whatever application documents they sent, which aren’t viewable. The three versions of the trademark were filed on different dates about a year apart. You’ll see that class 16 is there twice. For the first filing, it was class 16 and multiple group codes designating different kinds of goods (class 28 also contains goods-related things); the second filing covers a single group code protecting “printed matter” (presumably this was to cover any physical distributions of the manga).

I’m going to take a closer look at the third filing, which was officially registered in 2004. Class 09 covers a shitload of different goods and services, like way too many to list. What I’m thinking is that the first set of goods trademarks filed in 2001 was just to cover the kind of stuff they’d attach to issues of Shonen Ace and volume releases as giveaways—paper goods, board game-type items, and toys/dolls are all covered under it. Then in 2003, in preparation for the inevitable merchandise and collaboration dump the anime would lead to, they opened the floodgates to literally any Material Thing they could think to cover. Like, I’m pretty sure we never got any Keroro-branded egg candlers, fire alarms, or “cigar lighters for automobiles”, but might as well cover all your bases. Wouldn’t want the local fire department handing out emergency gear with your cartoon frog on it without permission, you know.

Included among these materials are some items that might be a bit more relevant to our case here. There’s a number of clauses related to physical and digital film, photography, and other media: “CD-ROM and DVD and other recording media, electronic publications, downloadable music, downloadable image[s]”. Now, while this doesn’t cover “animation” specifically, it can possibly be stretched to fit that definition. This is especially because, in Japanese, the term the MTL output as “images” is actually eizou, which can refer to both images and video.

So, the version of the trademark registered for the brand in 2004 likely covers certain media-related things. There are other classes that include the word “animation” specifically, but it’s possible that those classes weren’t classified the same way back then as they are now, and maybe anything film-related could’ve been interpreted by the law to include animation. Nowadays, though there are specific classifications for animation, specifically “animation available for download.” This subgroup actually happens to fall under class 09, though other classes contain similar items as well, such as class 41. You can search classes by number or keyword if you’re curious about this.

As I pointed out before I presented this data, all of these particular filings are for specifically ケロロ軍曹, not ケロロ. If ケロロ is to be used in isolation, it would have to be specified as such in the registration data, because what’s actually stopping someone else from coming along and trademarking just ケロロ? Now, remember the name of the Flash anime? That’s right—ケロロ. Just “Keroro”, not “Keroro Gunso.” Incidentally, this video is actually not formally titled under ケロロ軍曹 (despite what the thumbnail says). The only name in the title of the actual video is ケロロ.

So here is my theory. Maybe it’s a hypothetical, but I’m going to treat it like it’s concrete for argument’s sake. In 2014, to prepare for the Flash anime and related branding, Kadokawa filed for the trademark ケロロ—individually, without 軍曹. Because it was the 2010s at that point, it’s possible that downloadable animation was more specifically defined in the group codes filed for, even though the Flash anime did air on TV (again, the strategy to this is about covering as many potential use cases as possible for maximum copyright protection). Maybe it was under class 09, maybe it was another class, or even more than one. For whatever reason, the trademark is not publicly available. But because of what kind of animation/video/whatever that specific trademark covers, this little election video is covered under that 2014 trademark.

You might recall how I said trademarks have to be renewed every ten years. Incidentally, it just so happens that 2014 was ten years ago. Most likely, the (secret?) trademark was recently renewed so that stuff like this would be allowed to be made and can continue to be made in the future, independently from “Keroro Gunso” as defined by the 2004-verse and the manga proper. And because 2014 is the original filing year of that trademark, that is the year that is displayed with this project, even if the trademark was renewed in 2024, or some other recent year. By the way, all the ケロロ軍曹 trademarks I covered were also renewed this decade, so Kadokawa can keep on doing whatever exactly they were doing with those. There’s probably even more hidden-from-public-view trademarks, who knows, there’s a thousand potential asterisks here but you get the picture.

Fascinating, isn’t it? As I said, it’s possible that I’m just talking out of my ass and all of this is either way more simple or way more complicated than I’m making it out to be, in which case I just wasted multiple paragraphs of your time. But hey, at least it was a fun lesson, right? I’m not the only one interested in this, right? RIGHT?!?!?!

Do you know what actually first clued me in to the fact that this was not made in 2014 before it was confirmed to be the case? Not the upload date. Therefore, this could not have been made in 2014. This stupid detail is what it took to get me to think about this video for more than thirty seconds.

Anyone who uses Undertale as the base measurement for "bad fandom" I swear has never experienced what an actually bad fandom is like. I have made an icerberg picture to sort of explain what I mean.

Undertale was kind of a victim of a really bad game of internet telephone. Where it was "Some people are being weird -> The community is weird -> The community is a cesspool of toxicity" which was just really strange given the fact that Undertale was mainly just an assortment of AUs with a few very entitled people in it. People's personal issues just got made public and since they were involved with the fandom that suddenly meant the whole fandom was like that. FNAF similarly had it's rotten people in it and like- one AU is all it got popular for in terms of its bad rep. Then we move down a level to more "ship war" type of places. RWBY and MHA are NOTORIOUS for their ship wars. You can breathe in the direction of someone who ships something like Bakugo x Deku and all of the sudden your twitter account is gone because of mass reporting. Some of you may not remeber Google+ but oh man. The RWBY fandom there? It was something. If you didn't ship Bumblebee get ready for a world of hate. I personally never shipped it and oh boy if I voiced that it was war in my notifications. I thought the relationship felt out of place.

Moving to Overwatch and Soulsborne, it's a lot of pretentiousness. Not necesarrily horrible but a lot of pretentiousness. Overwatch is also full of a lot of sexism and racism in its communities on top of the pretentiiousness. No one can agree on anything when it comes to balancing heroes. If you're a woman in high elo you're boosted, if you're in low elo then you're just a wannabe e-girl. Soulsborne suffers from people conflating "accesibility features" with "Easy mode" which tends to drive people away from the games. Moving down another level, you have Anime Power Scalers and Warhammer. Power scalers are kind of the bane of the existence of any community. They suck the fun out of a lot of things and tend to spread their way into other communities. Everyone knows of the "who would win Goku or Superman" and the fights that break out over it get oddly extreme sometimes? Warhammer (and this is coming from my friend who is in the fandom who helped me make this) tends to be very stuck up about figurines. And a lot of it is complaining about not having figurines. Also from what I've seen from one of my other Warhammer mutuals is the lack of self awareness about the subject matter and bigotry is often ignored in the community. Lastly we have the "your home address, work place, and family photos are now on the internet" type of fandoms (idol includes corporate vtubers, and kpop and jpop fans). If you disagree with ANYONE or criticize anything, get ready to lock all of your social media. Not only do they suffer from general bigotry but also the fact that any sort of differing opinion will get you harassed. DC's is anything about Synder. Marvel is anything about literally any woman character. I have seen the nuclear fallout of the aftermath of kpop fans or vtuber fans doxxing people for breathing near their fave. We're talking locked accounts and everything.

Exploring ARMY Cancel Culture

Let's start with agreeing there's always a good time to block and report accounts and it is when they:

--use hate speech and slurs

--denigrate members and fans

--share personal or harmful content

--outright spread lies and misinformation

By all means, block and report those kinds of assholes. I do this at least once a day over on Twitter.

But today I witnessed something really disturbing.

I woke up to my notifications going off. I was being tagged and asked to unfollow a Twitter account because they posted photos of Jimin at Paris' fashion week, but they either trimmed Hobi out of the shots or just didn't mention Hobi if he were in the photos.

This was considered "diet-solo" behavior and folks were calling for massive blocks and reports.

So I asked: May I have some context please? What's problematic about this Jimin-focused account focusing on Jimin?

And of course got called a mootie and had some private quote retweets for my troubles. But basically, people felt it was super shady not to mention Hobi if he was in the shot.

Okay. That's a perspective that could have some legitimacy.

So here's what deeply concerns me.

This could have been an opportunity to have a discussion, to learn and grow, and actually affect some change.

Folks could have politely commented something like: "It appears that you keep cutting Hobi out of photos. You state you are a Jimin image archive, but many folks feel it is very disrespectful to ignore another BTS member. Would you consider mentioning Hobi or not cropping him out of your images?"

That is an example of non-violent communication, which illustrates a concept and a boundary, without insulting anyone or insisting the other person act in a way you deem fit.

The account owner could have come back and said something like: "Oh my gosh! I never want to disrespect any BTS members. The whole point of this account is simply to focus on my bias. But if it is upsetting to people, I will try to include other members in mentions, or in some shots, if I can!"

In which case, problem solved.

Or the account owner could have come back and said something like: "No I will not be doing that. This is my twitter page. I wish to focus on Jimin. If you don't like it, please just don't follow me."

In which case, you know this account isn't your cup of tea.

OR they had the option to say something like: "Fuck you. Fuck all the other members. Jimin supremacy is real. I hate every other BTS member."

In which case, THEN you know to report and block.

But instead of calling this person in and discussing the matter, people dogpiled on block threads and sent her a bunch of hate and spam, and as a result, she closed her account.

One less Jimin-positive account in a vast sea of Jimin-negative accounts on the Twitsphere.

Plus, someone's feelings were hurt. She basically said something akin to: "I tried my best but it wasn't enough. Please remember there is a human being behind this account. I have to leave without a backup account just to protect my mental health."

So... because folks didn't LIKE that Hobi didn't share a frame with Jimin in some edits, they grabbed pitchforks and torches and villainized a person as a solo, without any conversation.

Gone are her edits. Her archive will not be updated. People may have ruined BTS for her.

I'd been following that account for a bit. There was never a hint of shade toward any members, never anything negative about BTS in general; they didn't even draw comparisons between Jimin and other people. It literally was just an image archive focused on Jimin, making mood boards and stuff like that.

And they got run out of town on the rails. Straight up cancelled. An absolute perfect example of mob mentality and group-think, with almost no due diligence.

It makes me angry. If I am being honest, it makes me a bit ashamed to be ARMY.

I found BTS a little over a year ago thanks to a Jimin-focused fan cam. I was watching dance sequences on YouTube because I am a giant dance nerd. I saw a Jimin fan cam compilation of some of his performances. They cut out other members of the group in order to focus on his moves and skill.

But BECAUSE of his focused cut, I discovered BTS. From there I became a passionately OT7 ARMY, and very quickly after that a Jikook supporter.

BTS had been around for 9 years and I never paid a smidge of attention to them. It was a focused fan account that recruited me into this fandom.

Imagine if we did away with all bias-focused accounts or ship-focused accounts for being "diet solos"? What sort of fandom culture would we be creating? What would the ARMY microcosm look like, if we wiped out the celebration and focus on people's biases?

It's such a harsh, cruel, fucked up world. Can we not let folks just harmlessly enjoy things?

For my part, in any given situation, I always ask myself: WHAT IS THE KIND THING TO DO? Because I believe that is how BTS would want me to represent them as their fan.

Sometimes, the kindest thing I can do is not engage, just report and block vile little antis riding their hate-trains.

But most times, the kindest thing I can do is invite real, nuanced, complex conversation. I can approach people with the goal of making allies instead of enemies. I can try calling them in, before calling them out.

You might notice that I follow people here on Tumblr who love to ship Jikook. I also follow a few people who don't believe in shipping. And I follow one or two blogs who passionately stopped shipping Jikook. I don't agree with them, but I listen to what they have to say.

Because I am able to entertain a thought without automatically adopting it. And I am able to listen to people without endorsing them. Unless someone has monetized their blog, keeping an eye on them is not, in fact, a vote for everything they have to say.

So as to avoid living in an echo chamber, I will open myself up to a multitude of perspectives UNLESS those people:

--use hate speech and slurs

--denigrate members and fans

--share personal or harmful content

--outright spread lies and misinformation

Each and every person must act according to their conscience. I am not trying to convert anyone to my way of seeing the world. But sometimes I feel like purity politics is at play here, in ARMY. I see people on Twitter move like herds, or schools of fish, reacting before thinking, desperate not to be judged, so eager to feel morally superior.

That's... not self-actualization. That's a performance.

I want you to know it's super okay with me if you judge me. So long as you do your due diligence and get all the facts, please go ahead and make judgement calls about me. If you genuinely don't like my content, my methods of expression, my personality--you are absolutely free to police your own internet experience, and mute or block me. I WANT you to. I want you to protect your energy and do what makes you feel safe and joyful.

But if I'm HARMING you or doing something WRONG, I'd really appreciate if you'd kindly tell me what it is, and why it's bad. Give me the chance to learn and grow--or at least to explain my thinking.

Let me be human.

Let fans be human.

Let the members be human.

Humans learn by making mistakes.

I will say it again: as a human, your job is to make mistakes, gather up the related data, analyze it, and learn to adapt and do better.

If you get cancelled for just being human, then no interaction will be authentic. It'll just be token stanning and filtered content until all of fandom is just vapid, watered-down bullshit.

You should be able to be yourself in your own space, as long as you're not deliberately being toxic to others.

So the next time someone tags you and tells you that you need to unfollow someone who is problematic--consider asking for context and proof, sift through the evidence yourself, maybe try to have a conversation if you have the mental energy to get into it, and THEN react.

ARMY is in serious need of critical thinking skills these days.

Things that make you uncomfortable aren't always bad.

Things that challenge you aren't always toxic.

People are all works in progress.

Shame is a weapon, not a teaching tool.

Please use shame as a last resort.

How do you guys read hate tweets/comments about Jimin without it upsetting you? I see some Jimin focused blogs here posting screenshots about Jimin antis saying the most awful things about him, and I ask myself 'how do they do that?'. I read something terrible being said about Jimin, I get so heartbroken that it puts me in a bad mood for the rest of the day. Sometimes I wanna respond to these comments but when I try to type down what I want to say, I literally already feel so exhausted. So I just report the person, block them and stay out of social media altogether for the rest of the day. Sometimes this feeling can stretch on for days to a week, so I'd stay off social media for that long

I really want to know how to read anti stuff and not let it get to me so much because all that hate just can't be escaped if you love Jimin and follow socials about him. Even if you curate your timeline and block Jimin stans who like getting into petty fights with rival stans, it all finds a way to slip through in some way. So how do I become emotionally strong?

I used to be a lot like you, too. Maybe it wouldn't ruin my day but I've cried. Many times. Last year, when these things didn't even matter to me as much as they used to, the things I read one day were so bad that I threw up. Now... I have low blood pressure and a meek stomach so I used to throw up a lot even on good days (now it's under control), but sometimes it was triggered by stress or negative emotions. And that's what happened that day.

2021, 2022 I used to get back at people. Not all the time, not even often, but yeah sometimes. And my tweets used to get lots of engagements too. I mean, at least what was "a lot" for solo spaces back then; 200, 300 likes. Nowadays I see akgaes tweets getting 2k likes, but it started being like that after face. Anyways, I used to get back at people who were lying, because that's what's always bothered me the most.. the lies. As I've said before, it wouldn't bother me if the things they said about Jimin were true. If he was a terrible person, or if let's say he had actually gotten any special treatment, then I'd understand if people were mad. For example, you can't call Jimin names and say he sleeps with his boss only to have photos of Jungkook having dinners with said boss. The hypocrisy, the lies always bothered me. The character assassination mission people have been on when it came to Jimin. The gross edits, I never knew what to say to that because I don't have it in me to be sexually violent to other people and I also never wanted to bring that stuff to others. But lies were something I could at least try to correct.

I'm not sure I have a real advice, though. I don't exactly know when I started getting desensitized to it. To be fair, I don't read the tweets. Maybe it's once a week that I come across some report page or some pjm profile where they're having a back and forth with another akgae. But I usually don't see the hate lately.

I think what worked for me was deactivating my Twitter account every once in a while. Everytime I came back, I would go back with less "emotions" if that makes sense? I would not react so strongly like I did before; you'll start seeing things as less important than before. I used to deactivate whenever Jimin didn't have schedules, or sometimes I just felt like I had had enough and wanted to take a break. Maybe nothing happened, but I just felt like it was necessary. You have to learn how to deal with fomo, though, and then you'll be able to do that. I used to deactivate and then check stuff from fanbases and not fan accounts. I still do that, mostly though I do check a couple of fan accounts, too.

Something that really annoyed me about Simon is that like a year ago @/evysnosefreckle sent him some information that explains why mutual abuse doesn’t exist and he accepted that, but then said that we can’t say for certain who was at fault because “we don’t know” despite the heaping amount of evidence against Emma not only from the night she was arrested but from many other incidents as well. If he took a second to look into their relationship he would see that, if he actually took the blinders off. Then when Angelica Ross spoke out against Emma and he said “Ok now that there’s evidence that’s actually against Emma Roberts (someone’s accounts rather than just assumptions) fuck her,” someone replied to him and said we’ve been saying this to you. He said in response, “lord don’t jump on people when nobody came out about anything. all you have are photos and reports. When someone comes OUT ABOUT SOMETHING, then believe them, don’t slam them into the ground for shit neither of us know” and also “When nobody comes out to share their side and all we have are pictures and reports, then yeah, I’ll try my best to be neutral. But when people actually come out and Say shit? Believe them”

None of that makes any logical sense, pictures and reports (reports are people “coming out and saying something” so???) ARE evidence that can be used against someone. And there have been people coming out and saying stuff against Emma, specifically about her abusing Evan, for years! He would have known that if he actually looked into it and didn’t decide to just “stay neutral” for really no justifiable reason.

Another thing, that I’m remembering now as I’m writing this, is the way he talks about Evan’s intentions with Dahmer. Simon was saying that he doesn’t believe Evan actually cares because “he’s never talked about the victims.” Which makes me wonder if he listens to anything Evan says at all?? Evan has talked about them and the meaning of the show hundreds of times now. Evan was the one who told Ryan in the first place that the show can’t be anything close to the tone that AHS is, that it needs to be respectful. Not only did both Ryan and Evan say that, but also the casting director said that when he was talking to Evan about the role Evan was hesitant and had concerns about what I mentioned above. I’m assuming Simon has only watched like 2 interviews about Dahmer and hasn’t read a single interview with Evan where he really talks in depth about everything.

So yeah there’s my dissertation. It really gets on my nerves how Simon acts like he knows everything and he’s right and everyone else “just can’t accept any criticism” when in reality he actually knows nothing and just spouts out really misinformed and misconstrued information.

oh my god, thank you. you’re absolutely right and the way he acts like he has absolutely no proof, evidence or facts to draw any sort of conclusion is such an act. he literally only needed one person, angelica ross, to determine that emma roberts was a bad person. what if angelica was lying? you’re really basing your judgment of another person on a singular individual with a story? as several have already stated, the reason he stopped defending emma is because she said something transphobic and simon is trans himself. he does not give a single shit about her abusing evan and he purposely acted/acts obtuse about the situation to remain neutral and to continuously call evan’s character into question. this is despicable. he throws around his own victimhood as a shield which is also despicable. he needs to own up to his harmful behavior and apologize, if not to evan, to everyone else who has had to witness him perpetuating lies about him and about the dynamic of domestic violence. the falsehoods he’s spread about a VICTIM is not acceptable. he stated they both had “wounds” when there had NEVER been ANY such a report anywhere. the only wounded person was evan with a bloody nose and bite mark. he used this misleading and false language on purpose to legitimize his faulty rhetoric about evan being abusive. not to mention liking a post wishing literal harm on the man.

Fuck Your Community Standards

Closed out my Facebook account I don't know feels like maybe four years ago, it was probably less because my sense of passing time is horrible. But I kept Messenger, there are a few of the kids I speak to there and the couple of friends who aren't on Apple devices I just find it easier to use one of these platforms than the other options for communicating via smart device.

Three days ago I get a message that said,

"You can't send messages for 3 days. Something you sent in a chat went against our Community Standards. See Community Standards."

Now this is where the low levels of obsessive compulsive disorder in my brain kick in. There are truly only three people I message with regularly on Messenger, my sister in Florida, my niece in the same state and a friend in Buffalo. Now there had been two others who I had worked with back in the late nineties who I had messaged because I found something that they might find interesting. But according to FB's message "something" was the problem...

To one I sent a screenshot of the PoopReport.com website that he used to webmaster and create content for. He had asked my help on a few design project for the site, which I happily contributed to because he had helped me with copywriting needs on many occasion. The other a friend I had worked at the same ad agency as the first guy, who I really became more friends with post-employment. I had a few photos of my trip to Georgia after I lost my dot-com job and stayed a night with him and his beau at the time.

The math wasn't mathing, I didn't have beef with any of these people. Meaning some unresolved issue or matter that we hadn't talked about that lead to distance. I did send my niece a NPR podcast link about BDSM, but once again a National Public Radio link! I am finding it hard to believe that any of these people would report what I sent to FB as opposed to speak to me directly.

This is the shit I had about the post social-media world we live in, we don't say shit to folks because we may offend someone. What this leads us to is a whole lot of unresolved feelings and things left unsaid.

But my bigger issue is with directly with Meta. How are you going to send me some vague-ass message, and then give me no recourse other than reading your very extensive Community Standards, which I already violated and was being punished for? How exactly is this helpful to me NOT doing what ever it is I did again? If I don't know which message was the offending message I can't refine or adjust what I send in the future, I am literally set up to fail.

There are a couple of other platforms I am on that give you the right to dispute a matter, and then they will re-review the problematic post or message. But those aren't communications platforms, and I guess its too much trouble to do the same thing on these kind of apps.

What it does is first is annoy the shit out of me, cause I am left attempting to figure out what I did in a myriad of different kinds of post I had sent recently. Was it the words of inspiration, or maybe the cat meme or maybe the word "poop" is against community standards, how the fuck am I supposed to know?

The next thing it does is discourage me from using the app further, all of the folks I speak to regularly there I can speak to on another platforms, and fuck Meta altogether. But why does it have to come to such extreme actions, I am a low-level user. Truth be told I'd prefer to just have everyone on iMessage and get rid of this need for any kind of mixed-messages.

Taylor Lorenz, the Washington Post’s internet culture beat reporter, is being accused of “doxxing” the anonymous woman who operates the popular Twitter account “Libs of TikTok.”

Lorenz, the former New York Times journalist who earlier this month broke down in tears on MSNBC while recounting “harassment” she has experienced online, published an article on Tuesday revealing the identity of the social media user.

“Doxxing” is the term used to describe the act of posting the personal information of those who wish to remain anonymous.

Critics accused Lorenz of hypocrisy after it was claimed that she showed up at the home of the woman’s relatives to ask questions.

The “Libs of TikTok” account, which posts TikTok videos from liberals and has generated more than 662,500 followers, posted an image of Lorenz outside the home of one of her relatives.

“Which of my relatives did you enjoy harassing the most at their homes yesterday?” read the caption attached to the photo of a woman who bears Lorenz’s likeness.

Glenn Greenwald, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, slammed Lorenz, tweeting: “The same people who – just 2 weeks ago – were insisting that criticizing Taylor Lorenz is wrong because it generates ‘harassment’ toward her are now cheering as she shows up at the homes of the relatives of Twitter users to dox them.”

Ben Shapiro, the conservative commentator and Daily Wire co-founder, tweeted: “Taylor Lorenz is a terrible journalist and worse human.”

Shapiro added: “Targeting a Twitter account that literally just posts Leftists owning themselves because that account damages the Left is pure Lorenz.”

Lorenz defended her decision to reveal the woman’s identity, tweeting: “Reporters make phone calls, send messages, show up places, and knock on doors when reporting out a story.”

Lorenz added: “I reported this story out extensively, using every tool I had, to ensure I had the correct woman.”

In response to criticism that she targeted a private citizen who wished to remain anonymous, Lorenz tweeted that the social media user “isn’t just some average woman with a social media account” but is instead a “powerful influencer operating a massively impactful right wing media shaping discourse around LGBTQ+ rights.”

In a segment that aired April 1 on MSNBC’s Meet the Press Daily, Lorenz revealed that online harassment targeting her and her family caused her to experience “severe PTSD” and contemplate suicide in the recent past.

MSNBC’s segment detailed how Fox News host Tucker Carlson ripped Lorenz in March 2021 for calling for an end to online harassment.

At the time, Lorenz, then a reporter for the New York Times, said she had endured a “smear campaign” that had “destroyed her life.”

The dustup kicked off in February 2021, when journalist Glenn Greenwald called her a “journalistic tattletale” after she incorrectly accused Silicon Valley investor Marc Andreessen of using the “R-word” — meaning “retard” — during a private discussion on the members-only Clubhouse app.

Researchers at New York University found tweets with harmful language directed at Lorenz spiked 144% after Greenwald posted the tweet.

I never talk much about personal stuff here, although I have mentioned in the past that when I was 16 I had a short stay in a mental health unit for several overdoses. There were a lot of reasons for my depression (some are private and involve a traumatic event around age 6), but also my stillborn brother was a big reason too. I was diagnosed in 2013 with BPD (which I disagree with and think it’s a load of BS and I’m currently waiting for an autism assessment)

..But one thing I’ve never talked about is that I’ve been diagnosed since I was 14 with an Eating Disorder, and have spent most of my adulthood so far still being “treated”. They change the diagnosis all the time; anorexia, bulimia, anorexia again, EDNOS.. But it doesn’t matter what they want to call it because one thing that NEVER changes is the torture it causes EVERY SINGLE DAY. I want to talk about this issue because I am now 26 and it still continues to ruin my life and control my life daily. And I see so many people on social media, mostly teens promoting eating disordered behaviour and it makes me so angry.

Everyone has things they aren’t happy about, some people worry more about their body image. And I hate to be that annoying 26 year old but it’s true that everything is so much more intense when you’re a teen. You feel so much pressure to look a certain way, act a certain way, it’s such a self conscious time. But there’s a huge difference between that and having an eating disorder..

Eating disorders are NOT cool, they aren’t something you choose because you saw on social media. Skipping a few meals one month doesn’t mean you have an ED. And most people with eating disorders suffer for decades, and many others battle this illness their whole life. They rarely recover after a few years. Anorexia is not wanting to be deliberately skinny or skeletal, the main aspect is having a fear of weight gain that is so overwhelming you are terrified of gaining weight and will go to extremes to avoid weight gain. It’s literally like having the devil on your shoulder telling you you’re worthless if you eat, but it’s your own mind telling you.

At my worst (in my teens) I didn’t brush my teeth with toothpaste for over a month because I was scared of the sugar. I still to this day won’t take syrup medicines because of the sugar in it. That’s how irrational an eating disorder makes you. It goes beyond body checking, weight checking, etc. I even at one point was conviced water had sugar in it too.

First I want to say, if anyone is struggling with their body image, weight, food then I would always talk to anyone, even if it hasn’t escalated to the point where you have an eating disorder etc. But do NOT promote eating disorders on your social media. It’s irresponsible to share anything that glorifies/promotes starvation, purging, laxatives or any other ED behaviour, including images of emaciated women. That could be seen by someone who is already struggling/trying to recover from an ED and set them back. I sometimes share depressing quotes or whatever on my personal blog, but I’m not talking here about sharing movie gifs or clips of actors, I’m talking about real photos of people who are blatantly unwell. It’s sick that anyone would even share that stuff. That is a real human being who is suffering. Someone’s child, brother or sister.

When I developed my eating disorder in 2009, I didn’t use tumblr or go on sites likes this, I was never exposed to Pro Ana/Mia content/knew what it was. I developed an eating disorder because it’s an illness and NOT a choice. Whenever I see these sort of accounts trying to follow me on here, they instantly get blocked and reported. I last got discharged from eating disorder services in 2018, and in January this year I got referred back as an urgent referral. I cannot stress how dangerous it is for people to share this crap. Many times I have seen this stuff shared on my feed and it’s really been hard for me. I wish people would stop and think about the domino effect it has.

Can I also add, Anorexia Nervosa has the highest mortality rate out of all mental illnesses, from both physical effects and suicide. When you reblog that sort of stuff you could be indirectly contributing to someone’s death. If you are struggling, speak to someone. Even if it’s someone online.

I found a letter I had to write in one of my many Eating Disorder treatments. Not showing all of it as it’s very long. I wrote a poem when I was 15 that must be lying around somewhere, although I’m not ready to read that myself yet.

So the reason I think tae MIGHT go to Cannes is because he’s going to Nice (per flight accounts). Nice is the closet airport to Cannes. And while Celine often does photo shoots in Nice, it’s a kind of insane weekend to schedule a photoshoot there. Celine dresses a lot of big stars for Cannes so their staff is busy. So I can’t imagine them making time for a shoot that could happen literally any other weekend.

That being said, we know tae scheduled his vogue shoot specifically in NY to adjust to Jennie’s schedule, so he could have done it again. Idk, just my thoughts.

Yeah exactly, I was thinking it was more of a vogue situation when he went to the US at the same time as Jennie, very conveniently. To work and also to hang out with her. Looking back on it now, I think they probably knew about Jennie and that's why they cheekily made it a public fact that he was the one who chose the location and date. I'm pretty sure a lot of people know anyways, I mean in the industry. They're too famous, not only them but their group of friends and acquaintaces etc, it's too big. Word gets around. I don't believe that many people can keep a secret.

2) What’s your total AO3 word count? 486,667, apparently. That tells me each of my fics has an average wordcount of 12,166.675… Seems about right. I was never any good at keeping things short.

3) How many fandoms have you written for and what are they? Uhh… On AO3 I’ve written for Supernatural, Supernatural RPF, X-men (Cherik) and McFassy (James McAvoy/Michael Fassbender). But I’ve written a lot when I was younger that has never made it online, including NCIS, Pirates of the Caribbean, and lots of weird one-shorts starring everyone from Michael J. Fox to Kevin Sorbo from “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys”. 🤨  

4) What are your top 5 fics by kudos? “A Lesson to be Taught” – an SPN Wincest pwp fic where a dominant Dean fucks (and spanks) Sam and they discover that Dean apparently has a daddy!kink. Comes with a photo manipulation too! There be dick.    

“Taking Game” – a semi-dark medieval Cherik (Charles Xavier/Erik Lehnsherr from X-men) AU. Basically, Charles is a poacher hunting on king Erik’s land to his great dismay. And so, he’s captured and gets the choice between losing his life or serving the king for a bit… Dubcon and smut ensues.   “Only Like This” – a little SPN Wincest dub-con fic about hopelessly pining Dean doping Sam just so he can touch and kiss his oblivious little brother. It’s okay. Sam won’t remember when he comes to.   “It’s Only Carnal” – A dark SPN Wincest noncon fic where soulless!Sam needs to blow off some steam. And when it comes to carnal activities his brother isn’t exactly a novice – so why not use Dean’s body to make them both feel good?   “Demonized” – a long and dark af SPN noncon fic written in collaboration with the awesome @palishere. Sam is captured by some nasty demons who use him to lure in his brother. At first it seems the demonic scumbags are just really perverted and have a weakness for sexual torture, but they turn out to have ulterior motives…  

5) Do you respond to comments, why or why not? Yes, always. I think it can be a bit demotivating for a reader to leave a comment and get zero response – and so, they might not bother to comment on the next fic. At least, that’s how I feel personally. And besides, I really want to let readers know that I appreciate them taking the time and effort to actually tell me what they think.  

6) What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? Oufff… Seriously? How can I possibly pick just one when 99.8 percent of my fics are not only dark af but have gut-wrenching ambiguous endings as well? I, err… I’m gonna have to think really hard about this one, hold on… *Insert buzzing cicada sound*… Uhh… Well, I guess it might be… “Play or Pay” – a dark female!reader-insert Wincest fic where demon!Dean has you and Sam trapped somewhere underground. Sam ends up being on the receiving end of the demon’s cruelty when he tries to save you. Using Dean’s body the demon ends up raping Sam while the reader tries to escape to get help... There’s a little twist in the end. Loads of dead dove here, including death (not Dean or Sam).     “The Orange Hour” – where undercover inmate!Dean has to rape CO!Sam in order to save both of their lives and get them out of the jail in one piece. It doesn’t go completely as planned. (Comes with an nsfw photo manipulation).  “Demonized” – loads of bottom!Sam torture, full of hurt and absolutely no comfort... It’s just… I dunno, I think I and @palishere had a collective meltdown in the noncon and angst department. Sorrynotsorry.      

8) Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written? Nope, I’ve never in my life written a crossover. Usually, I’m too laser-focused on 1 obsession at a time. I can’t multitask, okay?   

9) Have you ever received hate on a fic? Yes, the fandom purity police has visited me on AO3. The usual self-proclaimed know-it-alls vomiting their bullshit all over the comment section about how “problematic” noncon is and how “sick” I must be. I thought about moderating comments for a while, actually – but I just deleted their follow-up comments until they left me alone. 😤

10) Do you write smut? If so what kind? Yes!! Gimme! Usually, I write noncon smut or just good ol’ pwps that feature some sort of dominance. That’s it. That’s my jam. In general, the only smut I don’t write is the cute, fluffy, feel-good, cuddly stuff… My smut’s usually pretty rough and/or some sort of dub/noncon.

11) Have you ever had a fic stolen? Yes. Someone stole “It’s Only Carnal” and posted it as her own on some Portuguese fanfiction site. She even replied to comments, answered questions and talked about how much she loved writing it, etc… Luckily a sweet mutual on Tumblr let me know about it and I reported her for plagiarism. The stolen fic was taken down shortly after and the account deleted. Goddamn thief. 😡  

12) Have you ever had a fic translated? Yes. Honestly, I can’t remember which fic(s). But people have contacted me on AO3 and asked for permission to translate my stuff into Chinese. I have - of course - happily allowed them to. It’s such an awesome compliment to get, I think!  

13) Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes, 2. “Demonized” and the fluffy Ficfacers prompt fic “The Masks We Wear” starring Sam and Dean taking their pranks a step too far. Basically, the brothers get angry with each other and they need to talk it out… No smut in this one, can you believe it?!! But that was kinda the prompt we received. The prompt was literally: “Sam and fluff”. Anyways, both fics are co-written with the lovely @palishere. You can find her AO3 here. 😊

14) What’s your all time favorite ship? Wincest!!! Definitely. Gimme all the brotherfucking, please. No contest. And coming in on second place I guess there’s Samifer – never paired consensually, though. I just love Lucifer messing with Sam’s head and torturing him in all kinds of cruel ways.    

15) What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? Oh, that’s a mean question… I have a noncon WIP where Sam and Dean are in prison. I wrote a whole story outline, gathered my own little dictionary of prison slang, etc… But I never made it past page 10 or something. Sam was supposed to get jumped by a gang of inmates and then Dean was supposed to helplessly watch from the sideline, offering to trade places if they’d just leave his little brother alone… And after that it’s all about a mix of healing and vengeance… But the story has been lying on the shelf for more than a year and I doubt I’ll ever continue it. Oh, wait! I almost forgot – I have a long Cherik WIP sequel to “To Have and to Hold”! Just checked, its wordcount is 18,729! Holy crap…. What a waste, huh? But I honestly don’t think I’ll ever finish it, because I’m not into Cherik anymore. That ship has kinda sunk for me…. So, now I’m hyperfixating on Supernatural, yeah?     

16) What are your writing strengths? Description, I think. I just love details and setting the mood. I like to think I’m pretty good at writing in English too even though it isn’t my native language… I wish to be better and expand my vocabulary but I’m doing okay nonetheless.

17) What are your writing weaknesses? Description, I think. Yes, you read correctly. I often describe things TOO much. Sometimes to the extent where the pacing gets so slowed down that I feel like the scene loses its ‘feel’. I don’t know if it’s just in my head, but that’s my major concern about my writing. That and my signature ambiguous endings, lol.

18) What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? Love it. It can be difficult to pull off, but if you get it right it can be magical. Just don’t overdo it and make sure that the reader can follow. I don’t think I have any fics online where I do it, but I’m not a complete stranger to it either.

19) What was the first fandom you wrote for? Ack, my poor brain trying to go back to when I was friggin’ 13… You know how many years ago that was?! 25!!! Okay!? *Huffs*…. Anyway, I THINK it might’ve been Keanu Reeves’ character in “Johnny Mnemonic”. Or maybe David James Elliott’s character as Harmon Rabb in the early seasons of “JAG”. I dunno. Either way this question makes me feel really old and I don’t appreciate it. Don’t @ me. 😅   

20) What’s your favorite fic you’ve written? That’s probably a tie between “The Orange Hour” and “It’s Only Carnal”. They’ve both got nice pacing and that’s my biggest challenge, I think. Also, I love the whole Morse code thing in “The Orange Hour”. I don’t even know what happened or how I came up with it, but hey, I can surprise myself if I want to, I guess! And of course there’s the smutty noncon and all of the hurt… So, those two fics are my personal faves. 😏
